Lantern & Fire pot work (by me and others)

July 19th, 2006

Lots of Stuff and Stuff:
Lets start with the older stuff.

A picture of the Fire Pots in all of it’s different stages. now to make the stands….

After 2 weekends of work the fire pots are almost done. I was travelling to SF last weekend for the FAF so Stuart and Thomas (a new worked monkey) did a ton of work. Here is His report (no pictures).

—————————–

“Got the remaining pipes cut and flared. I haven’t rounded the bottoms or
capped them yet, ’cause I want you to make sure you’re OK with them
first. Really feel that I was getting a good feel for it on the last 4
or so.

Cleaned the bottoms of all the pots that were previously flared.

Got all the square and round bar cut, edges on square broken.

Remainder of caps rounded, 19 more pots capped (welder ran out of wire
so had to stop).

Did a few tapers and a few coils.”

——————————

I have an amazing group of people working on this and would not be able to get the things done that I need done without them.

So here are a few pictures of Donia working the power hammer learning how to use it and “breaking the edges” of 1/2 square bar.

So breaking the edges is what we do to make the steel less “straight from the factory” and also to smooth edges especially when you’re planning on twisting the steel. More photo’s of this after we have done some.

Here are some pictures of Donia and Emily working the flaring the pipe.

—————————-

The Lantern:

I have started working on some of the inside parts, here is a couple of pictures.

Started with the above and make it into….

Two more of those then a little work for the others and then them I start working on the top. need to build a frame for the copper roof and make sure there will be enough reflective material to make this thing live up to it’s soon to be announced name.

Enjoy, More work soon, more pictures soon after.

Fire pots on the Move

July 3rd, 2006

Had a great weekend of work with Emily and Stuart. We ringed and flared 16 fire pots, ( and with the 4 already done That makes 20).

It was a good work day, soon we will start making the stands and many good things will happen.

-First we added a little more guillotining.

Then we chopped them in half and put a bannana on top

Then we flare them

--

And then they were done.

I also started did a little more work for the lantern itself. I had an idea, tried it liked it and now made all the pieces. soon I’ll start working on the roof and filling in some more details in the center.

-

I know it looks similar to the last time I took Pictures of the Lantern But this time it has 6 legs and the pieces arn’t experiments, They are the ones that will be in the places that they are in.

Fire pot Test # 2

July 3rd, 2006

This test was quick and easy.   14 oz (ish) of white gas, lost it’s gusto after about 1 hr and went out in about 90 minutes.

Here are some pretty fire pictures.

Fire pot design

June 18th, 2006

Stuart and I decided to play with the fire pot design a bit on Friday (6/16)

the quick addition of the ridge makes for a pretty detail and acually makes the flaring a little easier.  This will be added to at least half of the pots.

Fire pots Fire tests

June 18th, 2006

First fire test for the fire pots was last Weds.

Used 1/4 gallon of lamp oil and 1/2 a yard of canvus rolled and put inside the fire pot. When I had designed these I had intended on the fire pots lasting for at least 45 minutes buit hoping for longer.

15 Minute

30 minute

45 Minutes

60 minutes

Around 2 hrs

At this point I needed to leave the shop for a bit and check get some coffee. I put the flame out (quick smother).

After returning I checked the pot, the canvus was still soaked in Lamp oil and there was some more fuel on the bottom of the pot as well. I guess it could have burned for another hour or so before all the fuel was gone.

The next test will be with WHite gas cause it is cheaper and burns bigger. I’m not sure how it will turn out.

Lantern Ideas bloom

June 18th, 2006

Lantern:

It always fun to see how a screw up and create an idea that if done right blooms and blosoms. This week Mike and I had a surge of ideas for the lantern, and we are waiting for some steel to make it happen Below are a few pictures of where it is so far.

2nd group Saturday

June 12th, 2006

More of the same from last week. Guillotining. we are lots of the way closer to being done with that. we now have about 13 guilitined (26 fire pots) and additional 2 that I had already done means we have 6 more to do, (12 more pots) for a totoal of 40. Part of this project allows for those that help build all of them to take one home for there own (to show off).

Ain”t I pretty

and for those that know I got a few things done on the Lantern itself this week.

I’m focusing on the frame first. making it look right, then will add the details. I’m almost ready.

First we experimented in deighn, and decided that 1/2 rivits are a bit too much but 5/16 is perfect.

Bottom and top ring. top ring is on the bottom, and the bottom ring which will be seen will have lots of rivits and some nice detail added. while the top ring will be hidden under the copper roof, does not need to be “as pretty”.

thats it for now kids. All these pictures and more can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/tabasco/sets/72157594155253794/
